Rep. Jason Smith, a U.S. Congressman representing Missouri's 8th district, shared his views on recent actions by President Trump concerning border security and trade relations through a series of tweets in early February 2025.

On February 1, Rep. Smith commented on President Trump's commitment to protecting communities and securing borders. He stated that the President is taking "bold action" to achieve these goals and mentioned issues with Canada, Mexico, and China in relation to defeating cartels. "President Trump is delivering on his promise to take bold action to protect our communities, secure our borders, and bring in additional revenues to the federal government. As long as Canada, Mexico, and China refuse to do what is necessary to defeat cartels and end the import of…"

In another tweet dated February 4, Smith addressed the impact of illegal immigration and unfair trade practices on Americans. He praised President Trump for using tariffs as a measure against Canada and Mexico, which he claims have now agreed to discussions. "Illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and unfair trade practices have harmed Americans — our families, our farmers, and our communities. After @POTUS delivered on a promise to use tariffs to hold Canada and Mexico accountable, they have come to the table."

Later that day on February 4, Rep. Smith highlighted ongoing issues at the border involving fentanyl and criminal activities. He reiterated President Trump's strategy of utilizing tariffs as part of national security measures."For years, fentanyl and criminal illegal aliens have poured over our border. President Trump is taking action and using every tool at our disposal – including tariffs – to protect our national security."
