Smith, who succeeded Jo Ann Emerson in 2013, has a background in law and political science, having graduated from the University of Missouri and Oklahoma City University.

On November 21, 2024, Rep. Jason Smith highlighted the importance of addressing rural health care as a new Congress approaches. He emphasized that this issue affects communities across every state and should remain a priority for lawmakers. "Headed into a new Congress, the rural health care crisis affecting communities in every state must remain a priority."

In another post on November 22, 2024, Smith criticized the economic conditions under the current administration. He stated that inflation has outpaced wages during the Biden-Harris Administration and expressed confidence that former President Trump would restore economic stability where Americans do not have to sacrifice basic necessities to make ends meet. "Under the Biden-Harris Administration, inflation outpaced wages. President Trump will return our economy to a place where Americans don’t have to sacrifice basic necessities to make ends meet."

Later on November 22, 2024, Rep. Smith turned his attention to energy policy. He asserted that American energy producers are currently operating under an administration that poses challenges for them but assured that under Trump's leadership there would be a return to energy dominance without such fears. "American energy producers will no longer live in fear of an administration that is out to get them. Under President Trump, we will return to energy dominance."
