Howell County Sheriff's Office - Inmate Educational Program

201

 Inform - Public Announcement

1. Inmate Educational Program

2. Inmates of the Howell County Adult Detention Center (ADC) now have access to “Brilliant" learning courses. With these courses, the inmates can study and test on 60+ courses from all levels and grade ranges. They will have the ability to customize an agenda and class schedule they would like for each day.

3. This enables inmates to broaden their education while being incarcerated and set conditions to utilize their time constructively in creating opportunity in achieving personal and professional goals.  Behavior, whether negative or positive is first constructed through one’s thinking ability.

4. Of note, 80% of all state and federal inmates do not have a High School diploma. The Bureau of Justice Statistics studies have found high rates of recidivism among released prisoners. One study, which tracked 404,638 prisoners in 30 states after their release from prison; found that about 2/3 (67.8%) of released prisoners were rearrested within 3 years of release and more than 3/4 (76.6%) were rearrested within 5 years.

5. More than half (56.7%) of these re-arrests were in the first year after release. However, there is a 43% reduction in recidivism rates for those prisoners who participate in prison education programs.  The impact of education goes well beyond the walls of the jails themselves; it extends into the homes of the incarcerated. Studies show, that postsecondary prison education has many positive effects on the children of the incarcerated; offering a chance to break the intergenerational cycle of inequality and incarceration.

6. Understandably, an effect of this change takes effort, time, resiliency and encouragement on all parties involved.  The Howell County Sheriff’s Office truly believes a unified effort can and will make change in our community.
